ACTS 6:1-6 (NLT)

But as the believers rapidly multiplied, there were rumblings of discontent. The Greek-speaking believers complained about the Hebrew-speaking believers, saying that their widows were being discriminated against in the daily distribution of food.

So the Twelve called a meeting of all the believers. They said, “We apostles should spend our time teaching the word of God, not running a food program. And so, brothers, select seven men who are well respected and are full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will give them this responsibility. Then we apostles can spend our time in prayer and teaching the word.”

Everyone liked this idea, and they chose the following: Stephen (a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit), Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas of Antioch (an earlier convert to the Jewish faith). These seven were presented to the apostles, who prayed for them as they laid their hands on them.

1 TIMOTHY 3: 8-13 (NLT)

In the same way, deacons must be well respected and have integrity. They must not be heavy drinkers or dishonest with money. They must be committed to the mystery of the faith now revealed and must live with a clear conscience. 10 Before they are appointed as deacons, let them be closely examined. If they pass the test, then let them serve as deacons.

11 In the same way, their wives must be respected and must not slander others. They must exercise self-control and be faithful in everything they do.

12 A deacon must be faithful to his wife, and he must manage his children and household well.13 Those who do well as deacons will be rewarded with respect from others and will have increased confidence in their faith in Christ Jesus.

These passages are by no means all-inclusive when looking for the qualities of a deacon. The Bible, as a whole, presents the standard for our faith and practice as it was lived out in the person of Jesus Christ. These passages do provide the biblical basis for our understanding of the office of the deacon. We can see from these passages that a deacon should possess the following characteristics.

  1. GOOD REPUTATION (Acts 6:3) – Worthy of respect and integrity; above reproach among those in the church as well as those outside the church
  2. FULL OF THE SPIRIT (Acts 6:3) – Submissive to the leadership of the Holy Spirit; seeks to find and use his spiritual gifts; his life gives evidence of the fruit of the Spirit. (Galatians 5:22-23)
  3. FULL OF WISDOM (Acts 6:3) – Wisdom born through a relationship with God in Christ; spiritual understanding.
  4. FULL OF FAITH (Acts 6:5) – Faithfully stands by the Word of God and the Gospel of Jesus Christ that it presents.
  5. MEN OF DIGNITY (1 Timothy 3: 8) – Possesses blameless Christian character. In other words, there is no blight of any kind of sin that would call his character into question.
  6. NOT DOUBLE-TONGUED (1 Timothy 3:8) – Guards his tongue from abusive or unbecoming language, spreading gossip, complaining or speaking critically of others. Also acts as a peacemaker, helping to reconcile differences guarding the unity of the fellowship.
  7. NOT ADDICTED TO MUCH WINE (1 Timothy 3:8) – Living a temperate life to be a steward of good influence, doing nothing that would damage his testimony for Christ.
  8. NOT FOND OF SORDID GAIN (1 Timothy 3:8) – A right attitude toward material possessions, with no desire to exploit others for his own gain or profit.
  9. HOLDER OF THE FAITH (1 Timothy 3:9) – Gives strength to the church fellowship.
  10. TESTED AND FOUND BEYOND REPROACH (1 Timothy 3: 10) – Not a novice. Demonstrates his blameless character before being called upon to serve as a deacon. A man against whom no charges of wrongdoing can be brought with success.
  11. HUSBANDS OF ONLY ONE WIFE (1 Timothy 3:12) – “A one woman man.” This has to do with appropriate sexual fidelity as a moral standard for service. It does not necessarily disqualify a previously married or divorced man.
  12. GOOD MANAGERS OF THEIR CHILDREN AND THEIR OWN HOUSEHOLD (1 Timothy 3: 12) – Before leading in the church a deacon must demonstrate his spiritual leadership within the context of his own family.

SPECIAL NOTE: The character qualifications addressed to women in 1 Timothy 3:11 are understood to be directed to the wives of deacons who serve alongside their husbands. This concept of shared ministry is demonstrated throughout scripture and is first presented in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve. Other scriptural references to deaconesses (i.e., Romans 16:1) are interpreted to be women serving as deaconesses either alongside their husbands or alone as the widow of a deacon.

The Deacon Body of First Baptist Church consists of deacons who have been elected and ordained by First Baptist Church and deacons who have been elected and ordained in sister Baptist churches but have transferred their membership to First Baptist. Deacons are elected for life, but some circumstances prevent a deacon from being involved in active service. First Baptist Church has twenty-one men who are ordained deacons. Each year these deacons are given the opportunity to indicate whether they would like to be in active service. Those who are able are activated. However, all deacons are welcome to be involved in meetings and activities.
